Neve - Flowrida EP (Unchained Recordings)

Mastering Engineer - Saif Bari

It gives us great pleasure to welcome back one of the label’s very good friends, Neve!

With his latest release on Unchained, Neve expresses more of his own well-crafted brand of concrete funk, militant breaks and modern sound sculpture.

At times the Flowrida EP verges on the edge of that classic old school feel, harking back to imprints such a Reinforced or Bingo, yet at other times it takes a journeyed walk across various branches of the electronic music tree. Unambiguously dancefloor, the EP spans halftime, mid-tempo breakbeat - with his collaboration with Samurai Breaks, and two tracks of unapologetically raw Drum and Bass.

“I just feel the vibe. If I want to make a hardcore thing, it’s okay. If I want to do deep, it’s okay. I try and include elements of UKG, house, reggae dub things I love. I’m just trying to find a balance of mixing together all the styles.” - Neve

A strong four track release, Flowrida has something for both the flourishing return to rave community and the young Junglist alike.

Sharrol Kelby - Drive (Sublimited Sounds)

All my halftime people are about to be blown away by Sharrol Kelby’s newest release. To quote Headbang Society’s very own Segovia Carlos, “this track is what I like to call a certified bop.” The track, being released via Gainesville Collective Sublimited Sounds and premiered on Headbang Society, features what can only be described as a quite beautiful fusion of breakbeats, dope vocal samples & killer neuro bass. This track will truly take you on a journey throughout its three-and-a-half minutes reminiscent of putting the pedal to the metal. Alec Smith, the artist behind the Sharrol Kelby name, has truly put a name to himself throughout a hectic 2020, appearing on various virtual festivals including Digital FootprintsSubsonic Music Festival, and #iVoted FestivalDrive is yet another certified banger in Mr. Kelby’s impressive discography. I personally cannot wait to see what is yet to come!

“DRIVE” is a heavy, cinematic halftime tune that was created after taking time to experiment with some newly-discovered sounds. My goal was to create a progressive, energetic journey of futuristic sounds and melodies that also seemed concise. – Sharrol Kelby

DIVING DEEP W/ SHARROL KELBY

1) What served as inspiration for the halftime feel for this new track?

– Much of my inspiration comes from progressive/psychedelic rock and jazz fusion. The songs can take you on a journey through several different sections that all come back together in the end. As far as the halftime feel, I typically enjoy writing at halftime tempo due to the fast-paced nature. It really opens up a door of creativity for drum patterns and fills. If I had to pick one artist that inspired me during this track, it would be Vorso.

2) What do you see for the future of the Sharrol Kelby project?

– I’ve been working alongside my fiance, Ellie Burke, who has created almost the entire visual aspect of the Sharrol Kelby project. We have performed a few live streams as a DJ/VJ team but are planning to take this experience to live clubs and venues to show music fans what the Sharrol Kelby experience is about (once it’s safe again). Other than that, expect more music and new merch in 2021!

Bayalien Sound System - Smokestacks EP (We Got This Music)

Mastered by Saif Bari

Written and Produced by Chris Cohan and Ivan Lindau

The Bayalien Sound System duo, Poppa Doses and Golden Eye, return to Bay Area bass music label We Got This Music for another system rattling 3 tracker. 'Smokestacks', starts the EP off smooth with a slow psychedelic dancehall vibe, working its way into luscious flute samples, sweeps, and rich analog Moog sounds. The next track, 'SHAKE', basically a hip-hop beat on DMT, does exactly what it promises and shakes you into a thick distorted bassline with gritty drums and otherworldly transitions. The closer, 'Beautiful Bass Lines' is self-explanatory.

RALPH REIGN TAKES YOU ON A JOURNEY THROUGH "PEACE OF MIND"

By Mamu McMatthews

Enter into the mystical world of Tacoma based producer and performer Ralph Reign. Reign’s unique style, which juxtaposes a laid back tone against fast lyrical flow lulls listeners into a hypnotic, trans-like state, very much consistent with his music’s themes of metaphysics and New Ageism.

This week, Reign released his latest single “Peace of Mind”, which is, much like his other works, an otherworldly listening experience. The old school sample beat harkens back to Hip Hop of the late 90’s and utilizes airy synths that give the song an almost science fiction sort of vibe. When the melodic sawtooth bassline and soulfully sung hook hits, the listener is quickly swept away on Reign’s narrated journey of ponderance and enlightenment.

Lyrically, Reign plays with the boundaries of reality and fantasy. In this interplay, he finds a way to lower the stakes of (and even beautify) one’s struggle with today’s sociopolitical climate. The verses of the song present a string of consciousness which weaves in and out of anxiety and euphoria. One moment Reign depicts himself deflated and apathetic and the next he imagines himself assassinating Donald Trump, then quickly back to comparing himself to an extraterrestrial. This dynamic and the hook’s petition for a peace of mind not yet found, suggests the possibility that perhaps the very pursuit of resolution may be an adventure worth taking.

Reign’s whimsy as well as his pronounced philosophical intelligence makes “Peace of Mind” a must listen. Light some incense, lean back, and give it a play.

23 Odd Cats - Bass My Face!

Mastering Engineer - Saif Bari

https://www.aboveandbelow.co/blog/23-odd-cats-bass-my-face-track-review

Taking wonkiness to new heights, NYC producer 23 Odd Cats is pushing the limits of sub bass with his new track, ‘Bass My Face’.

Echoing the sampled, lo-fi surrealism of Leftfield Bass music, the track quickly builds to an energetic and gritty bass drop that cuts through speakers and takes the listener through an evolving series of oscillating patterns. The 2nd drop opts for a minimalistic approach, underpinned by a mesmerizing percussive line that brings the track to a catchy yet equally experimental conclusion.

‘Bass My Face!’ was mastered for release by Fixed Mastering and is available to stream on platforms 9 November 2020.
