It is clear that in the compilations there is sometimes very good, often good and always less good. So the times when the whole object is in the first category is an exceptional fact. And yet, this is the feat achieved by the Hong Kong label Unchained Asia with  Unchained: The Year of the Ox. A year under the sign of the bull which started very well for this label with these twelve remarkable tracks sailing between dubstep and drum & bass, while allowing itself to experiment in every nook and cranny between these two tempos. There are some names already known from this team such as Fractale, Subp Yao, Groves or OAKK but also newcomers in the already very qualitative catalog such as Kray. This young producer had already rubbed shoulders with our columns for a podcast when “Dye” was released on Shoot Recordings last July, and as much to say that in just a few productions, he has already become one of the most promising artists to follow. In any case, we are convinced of it, it is not listening to "Charged" which will make you think the opposite. There are only three more days to wait before you can get this essential compilation now.

Neve - Flowrida EP (Unchained Recordings)

Mastering Engineer - Saif Bari

It gives us great pleasure to welcome back one of the label’s very good friends, Neve!

With his latest release on Unchained, Neve expresses more of his own well-crafted brand of concrete funk, militant breaks and modern sound sculpture.

At times the Flowrida EP verges on the edge of that classic old school feel, harking back to imprints such a Reinforced or Bingo, yet at other times it takes a journeyed walk across various branches of the electronic music tree. Unambiguously dancefloor, the EP spans halftime, mid-tempo breakbeat - with his collaboration with Samurai Breaks, and two tracks of unapologetically raw Drum and Bass.

“I just feel the vibe. If I want to make a hardcore thing, it’s okay. If I want to do deep, it’s okay. I try and include elements of UKG, house, reggae dub things I love. I’m just trying to find a balance of mixing together all the styles.” - Neve

A strong four track release, Flowrida has something for both the flourishing return to rave community and the young Junglist alike.

Doctor Jeep - Unreal EP (Unchained Recordings)

Mastered by Mastering Engineer Saif Bari

Artwork: Tracy Chawan @ tracychehwan.com

With a release trajectory spanning Global Bass, UK Funky, Halftime, Dubstep and more, Doctor Jeep has repeatedly proven himself a versatile artist over the years, with releases on tasteful imprints such as Bun The Grid, Tumble Audio, Aufect and his own label DRX.

Unchained is excited to be pushing forward his new direction in sound from literally the opposite end of the globe in Asia.

Doctor Jeep’s Unreal EP, consisting of three raw energetic dance floor tracks could be one of his broadest statements to date, serving up a blend that tastes just as much of Grime and Jungle as it does Drum & Bass.

The title track, “Unreal", a two-stepping vocal-hook gem, has already caused a commotion on Boiler Room and Rinse FM. Attracting the support and praise of Sherelle, Fixate, J:Kenzo, and Jon1st to name a few, expect to hear this track echoing across bass scene on the regular.

“Clarity” is a collaborative project with Canada’s Tamarak (one half of Daega Sound). Whilst the track’s unmistakable 'dirty roller' aspect will satisfy Drum’n’Bass purists, its sonic elements ooze Grime and Jungle. Be prepared for a musical journey layered with it’s evolving grimey wobbly bassline, 3-step kicks and jungly rhythms.

"Angel VIP” weighs in at 164 beats per minute and flows with a buzzing energetic bounce, breakbeat and vocal hook to round off an EP with more dance floor brilliance of the "Jeep” variety.

China's boundary-blending Unchained imprint has been spotless in its sonic assault of late. The label's Year Of The Rat compilation was a huge statement of intent earlier this year and they've followed it up with a chop-rattling EP from New York's Doctor Jeep.

Various Artists - The Year of the Rat (Unchained Recordings)

Mastered by Mastering Engineer Saif Bari

Unchained launches into 2020 with its “The Year of The Rat” compilation bringing together some of our favourite producers on the label and welcomes some new members into the Unchained family from various corners of the globe - including China, Europe, the UK, the States and Canada.

UK based artists include HLZ, with a rare foray into halftime banger land, ROHAAN, delivering his own brand of trappy hybrid DNB and Bristolian beat smith HØST, with an eclectic pulse-driven masterpiece best described as a fusion of German EBM, minimal Drum’n’Bass and epic science fiction. Coming out of China, we have two of our most prodigious talents, 3ASIC and RADIAX, who represent the ever-evolving vein of Bass spreading through the region and for which we are proud to be nurturing on the label in the years ahead. Stateside, DAVE OWEN, ROOT FOR THE VILLIAN and QUENTIN HIATUS as well as Canada’s HOMESICK bring tasteful contributions spanning 160, ghetto-halftime and juke jungle. Each, on their own, exemplifying the wonderful permutations of up-tempo electronic being incubated in their respective stomping grounds. Then, Italian Trio FRACTALE, Dutch export SUBP YAO and Austria’s SENTIC CYCLE all step up, showcasing their ability to fuse rhythm, grit and aesthetics into unique low-end half-step gems. To round off the release, Unchained co-founders, LYNDON JARR and DANIEL POWER release their first collaboration on the label - a fusion of dark funk, minimal halftime and charged atmospherics.

Each year we look forward to celebrating the label’s code of re-setting the ceiling on Bass music with a passion for the dance-floor moving traditions of Drum’n’Bass.

The Best Electronic Music on Bandcamp: March 2020

It never ceases to amaze how the more experimental edges of drum’n’bass continue to morph into ever new hybrids. Case in point: the Unchained label out of Hong Kong, which represents dozens of different flavors of “ghetto halftime,” “juke jungle,” and other mutant variations on d’n’b. This compilation features talent from across the planet—the U.S., Canada, Italy and Netherlands—and leans heavily towards militant rhythms that emphasize a half-tempo lurch, with d’n’b’s scampering percussion whirling around the atmosphere. But it’s the contributions from Hong Kong and mainland China that feel freshest—most notably, the absolutely demented “Rudeboy” by Beijing’s Radiax, which staggers, squelches and roars, feeling simultaneously like an expression of a world gone mad and a stirring call to action.

Giant Ibis appeared on Muti Music once before when he collaborated with Jake Robertz on their tune Shenlong, so it came as no surprise to us when he sent us a collection of tunes that delved into deeper halftime DnB, Hip Hop beats with big whomps, some great squelches and melodic journey tunes with ethereal vocals and fantastic atmospheres.
Algorithms is an incredible EP of tunes that are uplifting and deep, a great listeners journey.

Canadian born Carter Hordyski is the face behind the production moniker Giant Ibis. Inspired by space, technology, and the infinite possibilities that life holds, this project was created as a metaphor - to let your creativity and ideas take flight. As a producer, Carter has always challenged himself to dissolve his creative barriers and remove the limitations of only making one genre. Since his beginning in 2016, he has quickly established himself as a figure in the underground wave scene. He has received international radio play on Plastician's prior Rinse FM show, BBC Radio, and has also released numerous tracks through Vibe.Digital. As a DJ, he has played numerous club shows throughout his home city and performed at Alberta's Borealis Music Festival. Being heavily inspired by Jungle, Halftime and Drum & Bass, his sound continues to evolve yet again as he ventures into the realm of higher bpm, bass music. You can expect to see a lot of new material forthcoming in 2020.
