Various Artists - The Year of the Rat (Unchained Recordings)

Mastered by Mastering Engineer Saif Bari

Unchained launches into 2020 with its “The Year of The Rat” compilation bringing together some of our favourite producers on the label and welcomes some new members into the Unchained family from various corners of the globe - including China, Europe, the UK, the States and Canada.

UK based artists include HLZ, with a rare foray into halftime banger land, ROHAAN, delivering his own brand of trappy hybrid DNB and Bristolian beat smith HØST, with an eclectic pulse-driven masterpiece best described as a fusion of German EBM, minimal Drum’n’Bass and epic science fiction. Coming out of China, we have two of our most prodigious talents, 3ASIC and RADIAX, who represent the ever-evolving vein of Bass spreading through the region and for which we are proud to be nurturing on the label in the years ahead. Stateside, DAVE OWEN, ROOT FOR THE VILLIAN and QUENTIN HIATUS as well as Canada’s HOMESICK bring tasteful contributions spanning 160, ghetto-halftime and juke jungle. Each, on their own, exemplifying the wonderful permutations of up-tempo electronic being incubated in their respective stomping grounds. Then, Italian Trio FRACTALE, Dutch export SUBP YAO and Austria’s SENTIC CYCLE all step up, showcasing their ability to fuse rhythm, grit and aesthetics into unique low-end half-step gems. To round off the release, Unchained co-founders, LYNDON JARR and DANIEL POWER release their first collaboration on the label - a fusion of dark funk, minimal halftime and charged atmospherics.

Each year we look forward to celebrating the label’s code of re-setting the ceiling on Bass music with a passion for the dance-floor moving traditions of Drum’n’Bass.

The Best Electronic Music on Bandcamp: March 2020

It never ceases to amaze how the more experimental edges of drum’n’bass continue to morph into ever new hybrids. Case in point: the Unchained label out of Hong Kong, which represents dozens of different flavors of “ghetto halftime,” “juke jungle,” and other mutant variations on d’n’b. This compilation features talent from across the planet—the U.S., Canada, Italy and Netherlands—and leans heavily towards militant rhythms that emphasize a half-tempo lurch, with d’n’b’s scampering percussion whirling around the atmosphere. But it’s the contributions from Hong Kong and mainland China that feel freshest—most notably, the absolutely demented “Rudeboy” by Beijing’s Radiax, which staggers, squelches and roars, feeling simultaneously like an expression of a world gone mad and a stirring call to action.

Giant Ibis - Algorithms (Muti Music)

Giant Ibis appeared on Muti Music once before when he collaborated with Jake Robertz on their tune Shenlong, so it came as no surprise to us when he sent us a collection of tunes that delved into deeper halftime DnB, Hip Hop beats with big whomps, some great squelches and melodic journey tunes with ethereal vocals and fantastic atmospheres.
Algorithms is an incredible EP of tunes that are uplifting and deep, a great listeners journey.

Canadian born Carter Hordyski is the face behind the production moniker Giant Ibis. Inspired by space, technology, and the infinite possibilities that life holds, this project was created as a metaphor - to let your creativity and ideas take flight. As a producer, Carter has always challenged himself to dissolve his creative barriers and remove the limitations of only making one genre. Since his beginning in 2016, he has quickly established himself as a figure in the underground wave scene. He has received international radio play on Plastician's prior Rinse FM show, BBC Radio, and has also released numerous tracks through Vibe.Digital. As a DJ, he has played numerous club shows throughout his home city and performed at Alberta's Borealis Music Festival. Being heavily inspired by Jungle, Halftime and Drum & Bass, his sound continues to evolve yet again as he ventures into the realm of higher bpm, bass music. You can expect to see a lot of new material forthcoming in 2020.

LYRICS

Sometimes I think

My voice is just too small

The problems too

Big for us to solve

But simple things

Can change the narrative

One filled with hope

The chance to thrive and live

PRE-CHORUS

Ten minutes, ten questions, ten years that are shaped

By taking a moment to participate.

CHORUS

Be counted, a better future for my family,

Be counted, money comes to my community

Be counted, I’m represented and can get what we need

Be counted, be counted, there’s power in being counted

Oh, oh

Be counted, be counted, there’s power in being counted

It’s just a form

No need to be afraid

It can’t be used

To hurt you in anyway

You have the power

For you and neighbors too

To be heard and

Claim what we are due.

PRE-CHORUS

CHORUS

Who wants Health care...BE COUNTED

Roads & Bridges...BE COUNTED

Jobs & Training...BE COUNTED

Schools for our kids...BE COUNTED

Representation...BE COUNTED

Good nutrition...BE COUNTED

Parks & Housing...BE COUNTED

You count so you should be counted!

Alyan & Zadoc - Dirty Disco EP

Mastered by Mastering Engineer Saif Bari

We've been fans for years and shared the experimental bass of Florida's Nocturnal Status. Now we follow the duo as they change course and dive into a whole new scene.

Rohan Bhatia-Newman and Ben Ricketts are reborn as Alyan & Zadoc. Still at the dizzying heights of production genius, Bhatia-Newman and Ricketts are aiming their sights at house and techno instead of underground bass. However, everything they've learned on the low end is applied to their new project, and their proof is in the pudding.

Dirty Disco is the debut EP from the pair, and today we have the privilege of premiering the lead single, “Disco.” It's got such a contemporary house sound that you might hear in a cutting-edge club, on the Playa, or at a Dirtybird or Desert Hearts pop-up, but there's an undercurrent of exciting new sounds that lets you know these guys are coming from a different world. This is going to give Alyan & Zadoc such an advantage as they explore their new path, and hopefully allow them to accelerate through their infancy and leave the less expansive in the dust. That's not to say that Nocturnal Status is done and dusted—the boys are just riding their newfound sound into uncharted territories. Who knows what the future holds.

DRMWVR - Come Correct (Muti Music)

Mastered by Mastering Engineer Saif Bari

DRMWVR’s debut EP on Muti Music, takes the listener on an otherworldly journey, where cultures have fused, there is universal adaptation of Hip Hop and Dubstep beats and people are possibly tripping balls or otherwise uniquely open minded, with a common grasp for melody and funk. We are really excited to hear a lot more from DRMWVR, his fresh and playful way of working with urban genres is both uplifting and inspiring.

DRMWVR is a Santa Cruz based music producer, DJ, and multimedia visual artist. His creations blur the lines between many styles, cultures, and times. Somehow DRMWVR manages to weave together an aesthetic and sound that feel both dreamy and dark, tribal and futuristic, earthy and otherworldly. By drawing people into these liminal spaces, his art invites others to walk between realms, and to cultivate their dreams into their lived reality.
